Discord Poll Duration: How Long a Poll Lasts and How to End It Early

The quick answer

A discord poll duration is chosen from six presets: 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, or 1 week. There is no custom length. The creator picks the window while setting the poll up, can end it early at any point, and otherwise the vote stays open until the preset expires.

Six presets and a one-week cap

Discord's poll help page lists the choices as 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, or 1 week. That is the whole menu. There is no numeric field, no slider, nothing between a day and three days. Unless the creator ends it early, a poll can be left open for up to 1 week, and after that the window shuts by itself.

The discord poll duration you pick also decides who gets a say. An hour suits a fast gaming channel where everyone is online right now. A day is the safer default for a server spread across time zones. Three days catches a weekend crowd that checks in twice. A week is for a slow community question nobody should feel rushed over.

When the preset expires, voting stops and the message stays where it was sent, carrying its final tally. The counts shown while voting is underway may not be perfectly accurate, according to Discord's developer documentation, which is one more reason to let the window do its work rather than call a winner mid-afternoon.

  • 1 hour: a quick yes-or-no in a busy channel
  • 24 hours: the least risky default across time zones
  • 3 days: a weekend question with room to breathe
  • 1 week: a slow decision nobody has to rush

No custom duration exists

The interface offers six buttons and nothing else. If the discord poll duration you want is ninety minutes or two days, the nearest preset is the answer, and the workaround is timing rather than settings: send the message when the window you chose lines up with when your audience is actually awake. (A two-evening question sent at nine in the morning behaves like a different question entirely.)

Because the message cannot be edited afterwards, a misjudged window is permanent. Discord's own material treats the poll message as fixed once it is in the channel, so the practical fix is to end it early or ask the question again with the right preset attached. Neither is elegant; both beat living with a window that expired before Europe woke up.

  • Six presets, no numeric field
  • A wrong duration cannot be edited afterwards
  • The only override is the creator's early end

Setting the window on desktop and mobile

On mobile, tap the plus sign in the text field of the text channel, the text chat of a voice channel, or a group message, and pick the poll option. The form then asks for the question, up to ten answers, and the duration. On desktop the same controls sit behind the plus menu beside the message box.

Everything is locked at send time. The person setting the poll up picks how long it stays open, and that figure cannot be changed later; the only lever left afterwards is ending the whole thing early. So decide the window before you touch the button, not while the form is open and the channel is waiting.

Ending a poll before the clock expires

Discord's FAQ says the poll creator can choose to end the poll early at any time. In practice that means opening the poll message and picking the option that ends voting; the question stops taking answers at once, whatever the remaining time on the clock said. If a debate has clearly settled by hour two of a day-long window, there is no virtue in letting it run to the buzzer.

Nobody else gets that lever. A member who changes their mind can remove their vote and vote again while the question is open, but ending it belongs to the creator alone. If the creator has left the server, the poll simply lives out its preset, and whether an already-ended poll can be restarted is not something the help pages describe.

  • The creator can end a poll early at any time
  • Other members can only remove and redo their own answer
  • An ended question cannot be reopened

A date poll in Discord

For picking a day among friends or a server, the preset that matters is usually 24 hours or 3 days, and this is where a discord poll duration of three days earns its keep: every time zone gets a chance to answer while the plan is still fresh. Turn on the multiple-answers switch and each member can tick every day that suits them, which is the closest the feature gets to a scheduler, and a poll can carry up to ten answers, so a whole week of candidate dates fits.

Write the options as real days rather than vague labels, because the vote distribution updates live for everyone in the channel and people steer around a crowded answer. Someone seeing that Saturday already has eight ticks will pick Sunday without being asked, which is half the work of scheduling done by the format itself.

  • Turn on multiple answers so people can tick several days
  • Name the options as actual dates, not abstract labels
  • The live tally shows when a day is already crowded

Where an open poll lives

An open poll is just a message in the channel where it was sent, and the counts update for everyone watching. There is no dedicated list of open polls anywhere in the app, so to find an old one you scroll the channel, search for the question, or check the pins if someone had the sense to pin it. Discord's own help material treats the channel message as the whole story; nothing describes a separate dashboard or an online panel where open questions gather.

The help pages also leave a few edges unstated. They do not describe a notification when a poll ends early, and they say nothing about reopening an ended question. Treat both as gaps: if your group needs a formal reminder when voting shuts, that is a job for a scheduled message, not for the poll itself.

  • The poll lives in the channel where it was sent
  • Pinning it keeps it findable while voting is open
  • There is no app-wide list of open polls
  • Whether an ended poll can be reopened is not documented

What Discord's rules say about fake votes

Discord's platform manipulation policy counts engagement as inauthentic if it is paid for, induced through promises of reward, or fraudulent, and votes for a poll sit squarely inside that definition. The same policy prohibits selling artificial engagement services for online platforms, so paying a third party to stuff a poll breaches the rules on both sides of the transaction at once.

The guidelines go further. Self-bots and user-bots are banned outright, and every account must belong to a human. Apps are not allowed to vote on polls at all, according to the developer documentation, which closes the automated route as cleanly as the paid one. In an App Pitches contest, entrants who manipulate the voting system, including by making new accounts to vote, face disqualification, and Discord may reject any vote it does not believe was valid.

Enforcement scales with severity: warnings, content removal, temporary suspension, or the permanent removal of accounts and servers. That is Discord's own published list, and it is the reason the honest route is the only one worth planning a question around.

What the clock cannot do

What an organiser can see: the vote distribution while the question is open, the final counts when it ends, and who clicked what, because polls on Discord are not anonymous. What the mechanics decide: six presets, one week at the top, no edit after sending, and one early ending that belongs to the creator's hand alone. What a payment changes about all of this: nothing that helps, because Discord's policy already labels paid-for poll votes inauthentic and reserves the right to reject any vote it doubts.

If the question needs longer than a week, or needs a window no preset matches, a poll is the wrong container. A scheduled message with a deadline written in the text does the job without the cap. And if the outcome matters enough that someone might pay to bend it, write the rules before you ask, then trust the tally you can actually see.

Discord's six poll durations and what each one suits
PresetBest fit
1 hourA fast yes-or-no in a channel that is busy right now
4 hoursAn evening question for a server in one or two time zones
8 hoursA full working day of answers
24 hoursThe default for a server spread across the world
3 daysA weekend decision, or a date poll with three candidate days
1 weekThe maximum; a slow community question nobody should rush

How to do it

  1. Tap the plus sign

On mobile, tap the plus sign in the text field of the text channel, voice channel text chat, or group message where the question belongs, then pick the poll option.

  2. Pick a duration

Choose 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, or 1 week. The discord poll duration is locked the moment the message lands in the channel.

  3. Toggle multiple answers

Turn the multiple-answers switch on when people should be able to pick more than one option, such as every candidate day in a date poll.

  4. Watch the live tally

Members click an option and the distribution updates for everyone in the channel. Counts shown while voting is underway may not be perfectly accurate, so wait for the end before declaring anything.

Common questions

How long do Discord polls last?

A Discord poll lasts exactly the preset its creator picked: 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, or 1 week. There is nothing longer and nothing in between. Unless the creator ends it early, the one-week preset is the ceiling, and voting shuts off by itself when the window expires.

Can you end Discord polls early?

Yes. Discord's polls FAQ states that the poll creator can choose to end the poll early at any time, without waiting for the preset to expire. Other members have no such lever; the most they can do is remove their own vote and vote again while the question is still open.

How do I end a Discord poll early?

The creator opens the poll message and picks the option that ends voting; the question stops taking answers immediately. That control belongs to whoever set the poll up, and it cannot be handed to anyone else, so if the creator is unavailable the poll simply lives out its preset.

Does Discord offer a custom duration?

No. The help page lists six fixed presets, and there is no numeric field for anything between them. If the discord poll duration you actually want is two days or ninety minutes, pick the nearest preset and time the send so the window lines up with when your audience is awake.

How long should a date poll stay open?

For picking a day, 24 hours or 3 days usually fits: long enough for every time zone to wake up, short enough that people still remember to answer. Switch on multiple answers so each member can tick every day that suits them, because a poll holds up to ten options.

What happens when a Discord poll expires?

Voting stops and the final counts stand in the channel. While the question is open, Discord's developer documentation warns that the live figures may not be perfectly accurate, so treat in-progress numbers as provisional and trust the tally that stands after the end.

Limits of this guide

This page cannot promise that any vote escapes scrutiny, and it does not try. There is no custom duration field in Discord's polls, no way for a non-creator to end a poll, and no edit after sending. Paid or induced votes for a poll are labelled inauthentic by Discord's own policy, and nothing here teaches ways around any platform's checks.

Rules come from the platform and the organiser

X prohibits coordinating with or compensating others to inflate engagement metrics, and it names Polls among the features covered. The Pet Industry Business Awards name the consequence in their own contest: a business may be investigated, lose votes or be disqualified on reasonable evidence of purchased votes. No seller can stop an organiser from doing that.

Why ordinary voting looks ordinary

Slido says it is alerted when an event gets an unusually high number of votes in a very short time, and Crowdsignal says its built-in measures detect patterns of potentially abusive voting. Ordinary participation arrives spread across the voting window, from different people at different moments. Nothing on this site is a method for getting a vote past a check, and a vote that a tool blocks does not count.

The legal position, and what is refused

Organiser rules differ: the RSPCA Pet of the Year Awards allow extra votes through donations on their official mechanism, while OpenTable Australia treats a vote cast in exchange for money or a reward as null and void. Both are contest rules, not statutes, and whether payment is lawful where you live is a question for a lawyer. Orders are refused for any contest whose rules ban paid votes, and for political ballots.

What a refund covers, and what it never does

Votes ordered for a poll that never appear on its count are refunded after the poll closes. A refund never covers an organiser's decision: Localsearch may void all votes for a disqualified nominee, and Mentimeter says a user whose access it cancels under its Acceptable Use Policy is owed no refund or compensation. No result is promised.
