Instagram poll template: how a Story poll is built, button by button
An Instagram poll template is built in the Story editor: you add the poll sticker to a photo or video, write your own question and customize the choices. Friends and followers can start voting immediately and see real-time results. Instagram's help pages describe that sticker and show no standalone poll generator.

Add the poll sticker: where the Help Center stops
Instagram's Help Center documents one button for every sticker: when you share a photo or video to your Story, you add stickers by tapping Stickers at the top, and from there you select a sticker. For polls, that is where its instructions end. The remaining Story poll setup steps are not specified there.
Instagram's own announcement of polls in Stories picks up from that point. It names the sticker you select, says it goes anywhere you'd like, and puts the question and the choices in your hands. Two Instagram pages, then, and one path between them: the Help Center supplies the button, and the announcement supplies what the poll needs once the editor is open.
Neither page names a plan or an account type as a condition; both begin at the buttons.
Your question and your choices: the parts Instagram leaves to you
Two parts of a Story poll are yours to write: the question and the choices. Instagram's announcement says you can write out your own question and even customize the poll choices, so the wording carries the whole poll. A vague question gets a vague tap.
The other half belongs to your audience. You pick the question; your friends and followers pick the answer, and they see the running result as it builds, because Instagram describes the results as real-time.
One vocabulary point saves a wrong turn. Story polls talk about choices and chat polls talk about answers: the announcement says customize the poll choices, while the Help Center says enter your question and answers. A step that says answers belongs to a chat poll.
Generators, mockups and PNGs: a picture of a poll collects no votes
Instagram's pages show no standalone poll generator tool; what they describe is a poll sticker added in Stories. Anything labelled generator or mockup therefore sits outside Instagram's own instructions.
A mockup is an image, and an image of a poll has nothing on it to tap. Saved as a PNG or in any other format, it records nothing. The sticker you place in the Story editor is what takes votes from friends and followers, and a chat poll does the same for its conversation.
A template from a design app fixes how the Story looks, the background and the room left for the poll, but the poll itself still has to be added in the Story editor. A picture of a poll has one honest use: showing a colleague how the Story will look before you build the real sticker.
Third-party poll makers follow rules of their own, which Instagram's pages do not describe, so their limits are theirs to explain.
Run a poll in a chat or a group: Add, then Poll
Chat polls run from Messages, not from the Story editor. Tap Messages, open a chat, then tap Add and Poll; the Help Center words it as tap Add, then tap Poll. A group chat needs one extra move first: tap the group's name in your Chats list to open the conversation, then Add, then Poll.
The Help Center also documents a poll in a direct message, and the last steps are the same: enter your question and answers, then tap Create Poll.
Create Poll is the finishing move, and it is where chat polls and Story polls part ways. A Story poll goes out to friends and followers when you share the Story. A chat poll is created inside one conversation, for the people in it.
A yes/no poll on Instagram: type the question, then set the choices
A yes/no poll needs no special feature: it is a Story poll or a chat poll whose question has a one-word answer. Because Instagram lets you customize the poll choices, you can type Yes and No, or swap them for wording that fits the question better.
'Keep the old logo?' works with Yes and No. 'Which logo?' needs choices that name the logos, and customizable choices exist for exactly that. In a chat the same poll asks for answers instead, so Yes and No go in as the answers.
An Instagram poll template you can reuse: what stays fixed, what changes
A reusable Instagram poll template comes down to a short routine, because the sticker is filled in fresh for every Story. Four parts are in your hands: two can follow a fixed pattern, and two change every time.
Between one Story and the next, swap the picture, rewrite the question, retype the choices and leave the placement where it was.
- The picture or video under the sticker: keep a clear patch where the poll will sit.
- The position: anywhere you'd like is a real choice, and a sticker parked over a face hides the face.
- The question: rewritten each time, as a closed question that one tap can answer.
- The choices: customized each time so they answer that question instead of repeating Yes and No.
Boosting a Story: why a poll sticker rules it out
A Story that carries a poll cannot be boosted. Instagram's Help Center lists a story containing a poll as not eligible for boosting, and it advises checking eligibility before posting.
The order of decisions follows from that: settle whether the Story will be boosted before you add the sticker, and if it will, leave the poll out of that Story and give the poll a Story of its own.
Platform rules and disqualification: what a poll cannot settle
Instagram's announcement of Story polls describes friends and followers voting and results that show in real time. It does not say how Instagram checks those votes, and neither do the Help Center's chat poll steps, so no one can say in advance how a fake vote would be detected or treated.
Two authorities are in play, and they are separate. The platform has its own rules. A contest that uses a Story poll to choose a winner has another set, written by the organiser. Paid votes do nothing for an entry in a contest whose rules forbid them, and the organiser, not the sticker, decides what a count is worth.
Disqualification, where a contest's rules provide for it, is the organiser's decision, and no poll setting changes that.
| Poll type | Where you start it | What you write | Finishing tap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story poll sticker | Photo or video, then Stickers at the top, then the poll sticker | Your own question and customized poll choices | Share the Story |
| Chat poll | Tap Messages, open a chat, tap Add, then Poll | Your question and answers | Create Poll |
| Group chat poll | Tap the group's name in your Chats list, then Add, then Poll | Your question and answers | Create Poll |
How to do it
-
Load a photo or video into your Story
Share a photo or video to your Instagram Story. Instagram's Help Center starts a Story poll there, and the sticker needs a picture or clip underneath it.
-
Tap Stickers at the top
In the Story editor, tap Stickers at the top. The Help Center uses the same button for every sticker, so the poll is one pick among the stickers that open from there.
-
Add the poll sticker and place it
Select the poll sticker and place it anywhere you'd like on the photo or video. Instagram's announcement sets no fixed spot, so pick a clear patch of the picture.
-
Write the question
Write out your own question. Instagram's announcement leaves the wording to you, so phrase it as something a single tap can answer.
-
Customize the poll choices
Customize the choices so they answer that question: Yes and No for a yes/no poll, or wording of your own when the question needs it.
-
Share the Story and read the results
Share the Story. Voting opens to your friends and followers straight away, and the results update in real time as their taps arrive.
Common questions
How to do a poll on Instagram story?
A Story poll is made with the poll sticker: share a photo or video, tap Stickers at the top, select the poll sticker and place it anywhere you'd like. Then write your own question, customize the choices and share the Story.
How to make a poll on Instagram?
A poll on Instagram is made in a Story with the poll sticker or in a chat with Add, then Poll. The Story version goes to friends and followers and finishes when you share it; the chat version stays in its conversation and finishes with Create Poll.
How to do a yes/no poll on Instagram?
A yes/no poll is a Story poll or a chat poll with a question that has a one-word answer. Type the question, then customize the choices to read Yes and No; in a chat, enter Yes and No as the answers.
How to start a poll on Instagram in a group chat?
A group chat poll starts from the conversation itself: tap the group's name in your Chats list to open it, then tap Add, then Poll. Enter your question and answers and tap Create Poll.
How to run a poll on Instagram?
Running a poll on Instagram comes down to sharing it and then reading the result as it moves. Instagram says voting opens as soon as a Story poll is shared and that results are available in real time; a chat poll begins when you tap Create Poll.
Does Instagram have a poll generator?
No. Instagram's help pages describe adding a poll sticker in Stories and show no standalone poll generator tool. A mockup from a third-party generator is a picture and holds no votes, while the sticker and the chat poll do.
Can an Instagram story with a poll be boosted?
No. Instagram's Help Center lists a story containing a poll as not eligible for boosting and advises checking a story's eligibility before posting it.
Who decides if poll votes count in an Instagram contest?
The contest organiser decides, under the rules the contest publishes. Instagram's announcement describes how the sticker works and what it shows; neither it nor the Help Center describes how any contest scores a Story poll.

No step here changes who votes, how many taps arrive or what Instagram checks. The sticker records taps from friends and followers, a chat poll records answers from its conversation, and neither settles whether a contest organiser counts the result. Story and chat polls are the only ones covered, and no route around a rule that forbids outside help with votes is offered.
X prohibits coordinating with or compensating others to inflate engagement metrics, and it names Polls among the features covered. The Pet Industry Business Awards name the consequence in their own contest: a business may be investigated, lose votes or be disqualified on reasonable evidence of purchased votes. No seller can stop an organiser from doing that.
Slido says it is alerted when an event gets an unusually high number of votes in a very short time, and Crowdsignal says its built-in measures detect patterns of potentially abusive voting. Ordinary participation arrives spread across the voting window, from different people at different moments. Nothing on this site is a method for getting a vote past a check, and a vote that a tool blocks does not count.
Organiser rules differ: the RSPCA Pet of the Year Awards allow extra votes through donations on their official mechanism, while OpenTable Australia treats a vote cast in exchange for money or a reward as null and void. Both are contest rules, not statutes, and whether payment is lawful where you live is a question for a lawyer. Orders are refused for any contest whose rules ban paid votes, and for political ballots.
Votes ordered for a poll that never appear on its count are refunded after the poll closes. A refund never covers an organiser's decision: Localsearch may void all votes for a disqualified nominee, and Mentimeter says a user whose access it cancels under its Acceptable Use Policy is owed no refund or compensation. No result is promised.
