What Is Discord Poll: The Meaning and Mechanics of Discord's Native Polls
A Discord poll is the platform's built-in voting message: a question with selectable answers posted straight into a channel, where members tap their choice. Discord's support material lists the parts you fill in: the topic, the selectable answers, a duration from 1 hour to 1 week, and whether voters can select more than one answer. The poll runs to its deadline unless it is ended early.

The parts you fill in
A poll in Discord is a message type, not a separate app. Discord's support material lists what the form asks for: what the poll is about, the selectable answers, how long it stays open, and whether those voting can select more than one answer. Everything else in the interface is framing around those inputs, and once you know them you can read any poll you meet in a server at a glance.
The answers themselves carry a flourish plain text messages do not have: each one can hold an emoji beside it. That sounds cosmetic, and partly it is. In a busy channel, though, the emoji becomes shorthand. People talk about the flag option or the rocket option in chat afterwards, and the poll stays readable even when the answers run long.
The order matters less than the completeness. A poll missing its duration cannot be sent, and a poll with one answer is barely a question. Discord's form enforces the full set before the message goes out, which is why every native poll you see in a channel has the same recognisable shape: a bolded question, a stack of answers, and a small footer showing how long is left.
- The question, which states what the poll is about
- The answer choices members will tap
- An emoji for each answer, optional but common
- A duration chosen from the fixed list
- The allow multiple answers switch
How voting works in the channel
Voting is deliberately blunt. You find the poll in the channel, tap one answer, or several when the creator switched multiple answers on, and then tap Vote to submit. There is no cart, no confirmation screen, no second step: the tap on Vote is the whole transaction, which is why a stray tap in a busy channel matters.
Because casting a choice is one tap, the honest worry is the accidental one. The remedy sits in the same place as the mistake: the Remove Vote control. Rather than trying to undo a tap before it lands, you undo it after, and the mechanics of that get their own section below.
Discord's developer documentation describes the same mechanics from the other side, for the apps built on the platform: a boolean field called allow_multiselect records whether a user can select multiple answers. One field, one switch, and the whole behaviour of the poll follows from it. That consistency is the quiet strength of a native poll; an outside tool bolted onto a channel never quite matches it, because it does not share the message type.
Durations and ending early
Every Discord poll has a deadline chosen from a fixed list: 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, or 1 week. Discord's support material presents these as the available durations, and there is no custom field beside them. If none of the six fits the question, the closest one wins.
What follows from the table is that Discord polls suit questions with a short shelf life better than slow, deliberative ones. A poll left open for 1 week has usually run its course long before the deadline, and the fixed list means nobody can quietly stretch a vote that is going the wrong way.
The deadline is not always the end. Unless it ends early, a poll can be left open for up to 1 week, which means the person who made it can bring it to a stop the moment the question is settled. That is the creator's call, not the voters'.
Removing a vote and picking again
Changed your mind mid-poll? Discord expects that. Its polls FAQ describes the sequence plainly: tap on Remove Vote to remove your vote, and then you can vote again. The choice is withdrawn completely first, so the second tap is a fresh one rather than an edit stacked on top of the old answer.
Two details are worth noticing in that flow. The withdrawal is explicit, a separate tap, so an accidental extra tap on a neighbouring answer does not silently replace anything. And the ability to withdraw holds only while the poll is open; once the duration has run out, the recorded choices stand as they are.
Selecting several answers at once
By default a Discord poll takes one answer per person. The allow multiple answers switch changes that, and its support material spells out the effect: if those voting can select more than one answer, each person can back several options in the same poll. Where the switch is off, a second tap on another answer is the mistake case from the voting section, cured with Remove Vote.
Under the surface the switch has a name. Discord's developer documentation lists a boolean field, allow_multiselect, that decides whether a user can select multiple answers. It is a small piece of plumbing, but it explains why the behaviour is so consistent across the platform: there is exactly one flag, and every poll reads the same one. A quick yes-or-no question and a five-way menu of options are the same message type underneath, differing by that single boolean and nothing else.
Votes Discord does not believe are valid
Discord's own rules give it room to distrust what it sees. In its App Pitches rules, the company reserves the right to reject votes it does not believe were valid. The same rules let Discord disqualify entrants it suspects of violating the user-voting rules. Both clauses reach well beyond that one event, because they state a principle: a vote on the platform is always subject to Discord's judgement about whether it was genuine.
The wider enforcement toolkit is published too. When Discord finds a Community Guidelines violation, its options range from issuing a warning to removing content, temporarily suspending account access, or permanently removing violative accounts and servers. A suspicious pattern of poll votes does not arrive with its own separate rulebook; it lands inside that existing one, where the response scales with severity.
For anyone tempted to buy poll votes, the practical reading is bleak in one specific way: the vote would still be a vote Discord is entitled to reject, and the rejection can reach the entrant rather than stopping at the individual tap. Nobody on the voting side of the screen controls that judgement, and no tactic changes it.
What this format will not do
The honest edges of the format are worth stating plainly. The duration list is fixed, so a question that needs longer than a week cannot be asked as a native poll. Ending early belongs to the creator alone. And Discord's right to reject votes it does not believe are valid sits above every poll on the platform, including one that looks perfectly ordinary in the channel.
None of that is a defect to work around; it is the shape of the tool. A poll in Discord is a quick, visible, channel-level instrument, and the limits follow from that design rather than from any missing feature. Treat it as a fast read of the room, and it behaves exactly as advertised.
- A duration must come from the fixed list of six
- A poll cannot outlive its 1 week maximum
- Withdrawal of a choice stops the moment the poll ends
- Votes Discord does not believe are valid can be rejected
| Duration | What it suits |
|---|---|
| 1 hour | Quick reactions inside one sitting |
| 4 hours | A question that settles within an afternoon |
| 8 hours | A full working day of input |
| 24 hours | A daily question for the server |
| 3 days | Weekend plans and slower group choices |
| 1 week | The maximum, for a question that needs everyone |
How to do it
-
Tap the plus sign
In any text channel, tap the plus sign in the text field and select Poll. The poll form opens in place of a normal message, ready for the question.
-
Fill in the form
Type the question, add the answer choices with optional emojis, pick a duration from 1 hour up to 1 week, and decide whether voters can select more than one answer.
-
Tap Vote to submit
Members open the poll, tap one answer or several where multiple is allowed, and tap Vote. The choice is recorded; Remove Vote takes it back while the poll is open.
Common questions
What is a Discord poll?
A Discord poll is the platform's built-in voting message: a question with tappable answers posted in a channel, carrying a duration and an optional multiple-answers switch. Discord's support material describes the inputs as the topic of the poll, the selectable answers, how long it stays open, and whether those voting can select more than one answer.
How do Discord polls work?
Discord polls work on a single tap. You find the poll in the channel, select one answer, or several where the creator allowed it, and tap Vote to submit; the choice is recorded against the answer you picked. Remove Vote withdraws it while the poll is open, and the whole thing runs until its duration ends or the creator brings it to a stop early.
What are Discord polls?
Discord polls are short channel-level questions rather than full surveys. Each one carries a topic, a set of answers with optional emojis, one of six fixed durations, and a switch for multiple answers. The person who made it can end it before the deadline, and Discord's rules sit above every vote cast in one.
Can you change your vote in a Discord poll?
Yes. Tap Remove Vote to withdraw the choice, then pick a different answer; the second choice replaces the first because the first is gone entirely. That works only while the poll is still open, so a change of mind after the deadline stays recorded as it stood.
How long can a Discord poll stay open?
Up to 1 week. The durations on offer are 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, and 1 week, and a poll can be ended early by the person who made it. There is no custom duration field and nothing past the week.
What happens to votes Discord does not believe are valid?
Discord can reject them. In its App Pitches rules the company reserves the right to reject votes it does not believe were valid, and to disqualify entrants it suspects of violating the user-voting rules. Warnings, content removal, temporary suspension, and permanent removal of accounts or servers are the published enforcement steps.

This page does not sell poll votes and carries no prices, no links, and no way to inflate a tally. The six fixed durations, Discord's right to reject votes it does not believe are valid, and its published enforcement steps are reported as they stand. Nothing here teaches bypassing any of it.
X prohibits coordinating with or compensating others to inflate engagement metrics, and it names Polls among the features covered. The Pet Industry Business Awards name the consequence in their own contest: a business may be investigated, lose votes or be disqualified on reasonable evidence of purchased votes. No seller can stop an organiser from doing that.
Slido says it is alerted when an event gets an unusually high number of votes in a very short time, and Crowdsignal says its built-in measures detect patterns of potentially abusive voting. Ordinary participation arrives spread across the voting window, from different people at different moments. Nothing on this site is a method for getting a vote past a check, and a vote that a tool blocks does not count.
Organiser rules differ: the RSPCA Pet of the Year Awards allow extra votes through donations on their official mechanism, while OpenTable Australia treats a vote cast in exchange for money or a reward as null and void. Both are contest rules, not statutes, and whether payment is lawful where you live is a question for a lawyer. Orders are refused for any contest whose rules ban paid votes, and for political ballots.
Votes ordered for a poll that never appear on its count are refunded after the poll closes. A refund never covers an organiser's decision: Localsearch may void all votes for a disqualified nominee, and Mentimeter says a user whose access it cancels under its Acceptable Use Policy is owed no refund or compensation. No result is promised.
